Lucknow: In a farmer-centric move, Yogi govt will carry out a special five-year campaign to promote organic farming while boosting the usage of bio-fertilizer in the state. As part of the campaign, scheduled to be carried out between 2024-25 and 2028-29, bio-fertilizers from all production units will be wheeled out to storage centres in all administrative blocks in the state. The move comes two months after the state govt carried out a three-year drive between 2021-22 and 2023-24 to strengthen 10 bio-fertilizer production units in Lucknow, Jhansi, Ayodhya, Banda, Azamgarh, Meerut, Varanasi, Etawah, Gonda and Aligarh. In the process, the state agriculture department ensured supply of over 22.7 lakh bio-fertilizer packets to nearly 30,000 farmers while providing a grant of 75%.In a recent communique sent to agriculture directorate, additional chief secretary (agriculture) Devesh Chaturvedi affirmed that the third-party evaluation of the scheme showed encouraging results.Chaturvedi said that the production of bio-fertilizers would result in reducing dependency on chemical fertilizers, primarily used in agricultural activities. The fertilizers are used to supplement nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium – the key ingredients required for higher agricultural productivity.Biofertilizers are used to increase the area and productivity of cereal crops (wheat, barley, rice etc.), pulse crops (gram, pea, lentil, urad, green gram, pigeon pea etc.) and oilseed crops (rye/mustard) and to improve soil structure, its health and as an alternative source of chemical fertilizers for crops.“To encourage use of biofertilizers, awareness will be created among the farmers by publicizing the benefits of biofertilizers and their method of use,” Chaturvedi said. For this, a daylong training will be organized in each Rabi and Kharif season at the govt agricultural seed depot of the development block. Farmers awareness training will be organized at 838 state agricultural seed depots of 825 development blocks, in which approximately more than 50,000 farmers will benefit from training.“Since biofertilizers are cheaper than other chemical fertilizers, 75% subsidy will be provided to approximately 90,000 farmers through e-source POS machines after wide publicity,” he said.
